Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor has commented on the attack which was carried out at the Nigerian Defence Academy months ago.

Speaking during the Urgent Conversations programme of RadioNow on Friday November 5, the CDS stated that the NDA is just like other schools and they saw no need to fortify it to "such a level that the liberty that is required to be able to emplace the level of leadership, learning and skills are lost."

Admitting that he is embarassed that they did not forsee the attack, Irabor further described it as an " armed robbery attack of any unsuspecting individual." He also averred that it does not in any way dampen the preparedness of the armed forces to do defend the nation.

He said;

“Have we not been under attack? That an attack happened at the NDA does not imply that we are not under attack on a daily basis. Do you know how many of the attacks that we have had to ward off?

“The troops in the frontline, the terrorist elements, who are they attacking? Even in the south-east, who have they attacked? –police and military. The attack on the NDA is what I would likely describe as an armed robbery attack of any unsuspecting individual.

“In any case, that is a training institution. That it is called Nigeria Defence Academy or military academy does not mean that it is not the same as any other school.

“Of course, I was embarrassed that we did not foresee such a threat. NDA is not a place we think that we should fortify to such a level that the liberty that is required to be able to emplace the level of leadership, learning and skills are lost. That is a lesson that we have factored but that does not in any way dampen the preparedness of the armed forces to do defend the nation.”

On military presence in the South-East region, he said;

“The situation in the south-east is not exactly what the narrative out there is. Of course, the military is present like in every other part of the country even before the escalation of violence. We’ve always had different formations and establishments of the military in the region.

“When you hear that military has increased in the south-east, we say no, you’re wrong, we’ve always been there. We even have less number in the sense that the number of armed personnel whom we have had to move to reinforce the north-east and some part of north-west.”

Fashion display mannequins that mimic the human anatomy have been banned in Nigeria’s Kano state because they go against Islamic teachings and cause people to have “immoral thoughts.”

According to a report by the BBC, the ban on the fashion mannequins in Nigeria’s northern state was announced by the head of the state’s Islamic police force, the Kano State Hisbah Corp on Wednesday.

The head of the Hisbah Corp, Harun Muhammad Sani Ibn Sina said that the use of mannequins to display clothes by tailors, supermarkets, retail shops, and boutique owners across the state was a violation of Islamic provisions.

Announcing the ban, Ibn Sina said,

“Hisbah prohibits the use of mannequins at shops, commercial and private residences and other public places.

“This violates Islamic provisions, it is also responsible for immoral thoughts among some members of the public, all these are against Islam.”

He revealed that the state government was launching a campaign to educate the public on how Islam frowns upon the use of mannequins.

Once the public sensitisation campaign against mannequins is completed, offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.

Ibn Sina added that the Hisbah has divided Kano State into five segments to ensure effective monitoring and implementation of the ban on mannequins.

Kano is one of 12 Nigerian states practising the Sharia legal system alongside the country’s secular laws.

Sharia law is Islam’s legal system and literally means “the clear, well-trodden path to water“. It is derived from both the Koran, Islam’s central text, and fatwas – the rulings of Islamic scholars.

Sharia law acts as a code for living that all Muslims should adhere to, including prayers, fasting and donations to the poor.

It aims to help Muslims understand how they should lead every aspect of their lives according to God’s wishes.

The spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, says the lower chamber of the National Assembly is set to legalize the use of Indian Hemp in Nigeria for economic benefit.

Kalu announced this at a press conference on the benefits and opportunities of Cannabis in Akure, Ondo state. According to Kalu, the House of Representatives has concluded an arrangement to organize a two-day stakeholders roundtable on the benefits of the weed that will be attended by scientists, medical and pharmaceutical professionals, farmers, insurance companies, executives, and private sector investors, He said the roundtable is scheduled to hold between June 7 and 8.

He explained that countries such as South Africa and others are currently reaping high revenue from cannabis which they export to other countries.

“Nigeria has been described as oil-dependent and not oil-rich. It is a worrying reality that we have not optimized the financial stability advantage that our oil reserves can provide us to diversify our collective investment and revenue sources.

The coronavirus pandemic exposed our weaknesses when global oil prices plummeted by as much as 15 per cent even falling below $0 a barrel on 20 April 2020.

Indeed, our economy is still recovering from that shock. However, as the world increasingly shifts towards renewable energy and climate-friendly energy sources, global oil demand will further drop.

Agriculture has always been a major strength of Nigeria and cannabis provides interesting prospects. Industrial hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for industrial use.

Once harvested, the crop has a high yield of edible proteins and fibres with more than 50,000 product applications ranging from papermaking, textiles, biodegradable plastics, fuel, construction, healthy food, beverages, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals.

According to verified market research, the Global Industrial Hemp Market was valued at USD 5 Billion in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 36 Billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 34 per cent from 2019 to 2026.

According to the consultancy firm Prohibition Partners, by 2023, the value of Africa’s legal cannabis market could be worth over USD 7.1 billion.

For this to happen, a candid discourse must be held by all stakeholders on the modalities for legalization, licensing, and regulation of the industry. I hope that the two-day stakeholder’s roundtable discussion on the benefits and opportunities of Cannabis Plant and CBD Oil in Nigeria, scheduled to hold on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 June 2021 will achieve this.

To enable this process of legalization, I have presented before the House of Representatives, the Dangerous Drugs Act (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which when passed, will usher in a new era of medicinal cannabis from production processing and distribution.

I expect that the exchanges that will ensue at the roundtable on June 7 and 8, 2021, will greatly optimize the deliberations of the National Assembly on the bill, as well as preparations by the executive arm of government to regulate the sector. Nigerians must understand that we are not alone in this race to establish a lucrative medical and industrial hemp economy.

Based on recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN) voted to remove Cannabis from schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, and reclassified it as medicinal and therapeutic, on December 2, 2020. Several countries have legalized medicinal and industrial hemp and other African countries are moving to do the same.”

The Nigerian military has warned politicians and military personnel against coup in Nigeria

The force issued the warning in a statement posted on its website by its spokesperson Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu.

He said the military would not put itself in a position that would undermine democracy, adding that it would crush any attempt to overthrow the government.

The attention of the military high command has been drawn to a statement purported to have been made by one Robert Clark SAN, suggesting that current political leadership should hand over power to the military for the purpose of restructuring,” said Brigadier General Nwachukwu.

He added that the Nigerian military “warn misguided politicians who nurse the inordinate ambition to rule this country outside the ballot box to banish such thoughts as the military under the current leadership remain resolute in the Defence of Nigeria’s Democracy and its growth.” because the military is ready to defend the country.

The full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any personnel found to collude with people having such agenda. The current security challenges are not insurmountable.” said Brigadier General Nwachukwu.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Army said the security challenges facing the country were insurmountable, adding that they were working with other security agencies to address them.

Insecurity plaguing parts of Nigeria continues to draw public attention, especially to what they see as the negligence of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in overcoming it.

The country has been plagued by Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings for ransom in the north-east and north-west, while separatists from the IPOB continue to attack police and other security forces in the south-east and south-east of the country.
Last week, a prominent Christian cleric who had previously backed President Buhari, Rev. Fada Ejke Mbaka, called on the president to step down or be removed.

He said the president had failed to protect the lives of the people and therefore did not see the point of staying in power.
