Fashion display mannequins that mimic the human anatomy have been banned in Nigeria’s Kano state because they go against Islamic teachings and cause people to have “immoral thoughts.”
According to a report by the BBC, the ban on the fashion mannequins in Nigeria’s northern state was announced by the head of the state’s Islamic police force, the Kano State Hisbah Corp on Wednesday.
The head of the Hisbah Corp, Harun Muhammad Sani Ibn Sina said that the use of mannequins to display clothes by tailors, supermarkets, retail shops, and boutique owners across the state was a violation of Islamic provisions.
Announcing the ban, Ibn Sina said,
“Hisbah prohibits the use of mannequins at shops, commercial and private residences and other public places.
“This violates Islamic provisions, it is also responsible for immoral thoughts among some members of the public, all these are against Islam.”
He revealed that the state government was launching a campaign to educate the public on how Islam frowns upon the use of mannequins.
Once the public sensitisation campaign against mannequins is completed, offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.
Ibn Sina added that the Hisbah has divided Kano State into five segments to ensure effective monitoring and implementation of the ban on mannequins.
Kano is one of 12 Nigerian states practising the Sharia legal system alongside the country’s secular laws.
Sharia law is Islam’s legal system and literally means “the clear, well-trodden path to water“. It is derived from both the Koran, Islam’s central text, and fatwas – the rulings of Islamic scholars.
Sharia law acts as a code for living that all Muslims should adhere to, including prayers, fasting and donations to the poor.
It aims to help Muslims understand how they should lead every aspect of their lives according to God’s wishes.
