The Senate of the University of Benin has lifted the suspension of the Students’ Union Executives. This followed the letters of appeal by the executives to the Senate and school Management as well as interventions by the Edo state government and other stakeholders.
The Union activities were suspended on 30th March, 2021, as a result of actions by the Union executives to undermine the authority of the school Management in the wake of the re-adjustment of the 2nd-semester calendar.
The Senate of the University of Benin, at its special meeting held on Monday, 4th December, 2017 deliberated exhaustively on the role played by the present Students’ Union Executives and Parliament on the recent students’ unrest. The Senate, after due consideration, decided as follows:
- That the present Students’ Union Executives and Parliament be suspended from office and advised to handover any property belonging to the union and University to the appropriate authority.
- Consequently, Management has set up a panel of investigation to look at the remote and immediate cause(s) of the crisis.
In the meantime, Management will make representation to Council on the issues of review of hostel charges.

Akpabio said; “The commission is broke because the funding system is poor. We must leave the NDDC better than we found it even if it means that the lawmakers have to tinker with the law.
“The current funding patterns and budgeting processes must embrace good governance to achieve the best we can, while asking for more funds to carry out more sustainable projects and programmes.
“Corruption is one of the greatest problems of the Nigerian society and it also finds its ugly and devastating effects in all sectors of the polity, including the NDDC.
"The level of corruption engulfed all the sectors including government, parastatals, ministries, government officials and community leaders even the youth leaders and the NDDC is not left out.
“Weak political and institutional governance in the Niger Delta has led to the misuse of public resources, poor service delivery and poor enforcement of the law.
“The consequence has been the lingering restiveness, breakdown of trust, abuse and misuse of power between officials and the communities, embezzlement and attendant violence”.
In his welcome address, the Interim Administrator/Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, Effiong Akwa, said the retreat was in furtherance of consultation with its stakeholders for speedy development of the region.
Akwa said that the NDDC was done with its unsavoury past, stressing that continuous consultation and collaboration for effective development were the focus of the commission.
“We are here today in furtherance of our ongoing consultations with internal and external stakeholders of the NDDC for speedy development of our beloved Niger Delta region.
“The NDDC is born again. Contrary to its unsavoury pasts, the core of our new personae is continual consultations and collaboration with stakeholders to co-create commonalities for effective development of the Niger Delta.
“I beckon on all stakeholders of the NDDC and the Niger Delta to come and let us reason together. Please come, let us work together to create a common way forward for the benefit of our people,” Akwa said.
In his goodwill message, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta, called for cooperation among the executive and the legislature to enhance development of the region.

US President, Joe Biden on Wednesday April 14, formally announced his decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan before September 11, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that led the US into the country to wage its longest war.
Biden delivered the historic statement from precisely the same spot in
the White House Treaty Room that President George W. Bush announced the
start of the war on October 7, 2001.
Biden said after the statement he'll visit the section of Arlington
National Cemetery where many of America's war dead from Afghanistan are
buried.
He also added that American diplomatic and humanitarian efforts will
continue in Afghanistan while the US would support peace efforts between
the Afghan government and the Taliban but the war between the US and
Afghanistan is over.
"We cannot continue the cycle of extending or expanding our military presence in Afghanistan hoping to create the ideal conditions for our withdrawal, expecting a different result," Biden said.
"I am now the fourth American president to preside over an American
troop presence in Afghanistan. Two Republicans. Two Democrats," he
added. "I will not pass this responsibility to a fifth."
"It is time to end America's longest war. It is time for American troops to come home," he said.
Biden said the withdrawal will begin on May 1, in line with an agreement
President Donald Trump's administration made with the Taliban. He said
the complete withdrawal will be done by September 11.
The White House believes that after two decades of "war," it is clear to
the President that throwing more time and money at Afghanistan's
problems wasn't going to work.
"This is not conditions-based," a senior administration official heavily involved in the deliberations said on Tuesday.
"The President has judged that a conditions-based approach, which has
been the approach of the past two decades, is a recipe for staying in
Afghanistan forever."
Some US troops will remain to protect American diplomats, though officials declined to provide a precise number.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said Wednesday he spoke to Biden and that he "respects the US decision."
"Afghanistan's proud security and defense forces are fully capable of
defending its people and country, which they have been doing all along,
and for which the Afghan nation will forever remain grateful," Ghani
said on Twitter.
Biden said that he spoke with former President George W. Bush on Tuesday
ahead of announcing his decision to withdraw the troops.
"I spoke yesterday with President Bush to inform him of my decision. While he and I have had many disagreements over policy throughout the years, we are absolutely united in our respect and support for the valor, courage and integrity of the women and men of the United States forces who've served," Biden said.
The war in Afghanistan has killed some 2,300 US troops and cost more than $2 trillion.

Queen Elizabeth II has ordered that no royal should wear military uniform for the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.
Prince Harry had faced the humiliating prospect of being the only senior male in the royal family who won't wear the military uniform after losing his honorary ranks.
Harry, 36, was stripped of his three military titles when he quit royal duty with wife Meghan.
Royal protocol now means the Duke — who did two tours of Afghanistan with the Blues and Royals — can only wear a suit with medals at royal functions.
Also, there was serious debate about whether Prince Andrew should be allowed to wear his Admiral uniform since he's been implicated in the scandal involving convicted pedophile Jeffrey Eastern.
While Andrew has lost many of his charitable patronages, he has not been stripped of his military positions and titles yet, unlike Prince Harry.
Piers Morgan even weighed in saying "shameful" Prince Andrew should be denied wearing an Admiral's uniform until he speaks to the FBI over his alleged links to Jeffrey Epstein.
Piers Morgan wrote: "His request to attend the funeral as an Admiral when he has so far failed to either clear his name or return to public duties is completely outrageous.
"How dare he 'demand' anything given his refusal to be interviewed by the FBI about a very serious sex crime investigation?"
Insiders involved in planning for Saturday’s funeral claim the Queen personally stepped in to suggest all senior male royals wear suits and ties.
A military source told The Sun: "It’s the most eloquent solution to the problem."
Another source confirmed last night that "current thinking is no uniforms".
As Nigerians mark the 7th anniversary of the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, the Presidency has assured that the Federal government is still working towards the rescue of the 122 of the girls still in Boko Haram captivity.
Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, gave the assurance in a statement released on Wednesday night, April 14.
''The Presidency reassures parents and all concerned citizens that the missing students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, remain constantly on the minds of government as they are always on the minds of their parents.
The Presidency gives assurances that the release of the remaining Chibok girls is still work in progress.
No one is giving up hope here. Efforts to secure their release through various channels and activities of the security and intelligence agencies remain on course. The recent decisive push by the military against the terrorists gives hope that a breakthrough is possible and could happen anytime soon.
The Presidency asks for support, understanding and prayers for the military as they discharge their historic mandate to quickly finish off the insurgency war and free all citizens held hostage.''
Real Madrid's team bus has been damaged by Liverpool fans while on its route to Anfield for tonight's crunch champions league clash between both clubs.
Video footage and images show a broken window on the side of the luxury bus outside Liverpool's home as stones and projectiles were launched towards the bus with one stone breaking the window facing the seat where club coach Zinedine Zidane sat.
A video online shows Liverpool staff cleaning up a pile of broken glass with Merseyside Police officers in attendance after hundreds of Liverpool fans had earlier been spotted lining Anfield Road ahead of kick-off.
Liverpool has now reacted to the incident.
A club spokesman said: "We condemn unequivocally the actions that led
to Real Madrid’s team bus being damaged during its arrival to Anfield
this evening
"It is totally unacceptable and shameful behaviour of a few individuals.
"We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any distress caused. We will
work together with Merseyside Police to establish the facts and
identify those responsible.”
Zinedine Zidane's side headed to Liverpool's home ground with a 3-1 aggregate lead from their first-leg in Madrid.
