A Manchester United legend has revealed one of the most traumatic experiences he suffered as a teenager; being sexually abused at the age of 13.

The famous Manchester United left-back, Patrice Evra, opened up about how he grew up with a rough life on a new BBC One show dubbed "Freeze the Fear". Speaking on the show about his early life before being a famous footballer, Evra said during his childhood he used to "hustle," selling drugs and begging for food.

Opening up about his sexual abuse, Evra stated that he was abused by his school's principal and that he [Evra] still remembers this traumatic experience.I did like three things before playing football: sell drugs, Begging in front of the shop for money and working in a TV shop One is not true.

I didn’t sell any TVs. The other two are true. I was like 13.

He added

Being sexually abused at the age of 13 had a massive impact on my life. You just feel shame about yourself. When you don’t trust the authorities, because it was my headteacher, you don’t trust anybody else.

The retired Manchester United star was born in the capital city of Senegal, Dakar. From Dakar, Evra moved to Belgium, where he later left, only to settle in France.

After settling in France, Evra tried his luck, becoming a footballer at the age of 17. Football later saved him from his ‘chaotic’ and rough background.

The football saved me. When I was 17, I traveled to Italy. I remember when we arrived and we were sitting all the time and they were serving us food. I got into my room. I wore a tracksuit and I called my Mum and said, ‘Mum, here is like heaven, people are serving us food, it’s like two forks on one side, two knives on one side’. That’s my best memory.

During his football career, Evra played for Juventus, AS Monaco, Marseille, and Manchester United. At Man United, he bagged five premier league titles, three League Cups, and the Champions League.
