In a new surprising development that has hardly pleased Barca fans, Ballon d’Or winner and the people’s favourite skipper Lionel Messi has reportedly handed over his notice to leave Barcelona and activated a clause that will unilaterally end his contract with the club, reports from his homeland of Argentina reveal.
The sad development was confirmed by TyC Sports this Tuesday morning claiming FC Barcelona received a message from Lionel Messi confirming his plans to depart from the team.

His decision comes after the most humiliating game Barcelona had, losing 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-final to Bayern Munich.
The trophyless season at the Camp Nou is said to have also angered the player.
Messi has been with the club since 14 December 2000. He has given his best years to the club, winning the club so many trophies – before his legs began to wane recently.
His move to cancel his contract with the only team he has ever played for was a situation neither the club nor Messi ever wanted, reports indicate.

He would have happily ended his career with Barcelona, but the recent situation behind the scenes with the board are reportedly pushing away one of the world’s most valuable player – a close source confirmed.
Ever since the rumour started to circulate, it has been widely reported that his former coach, Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have been crunching numbers to work out if they were able to attract the player without breaching Financial Fair Play rules once again.
This as Inter Milan are also understood to be interested in bringing Messi to the San Siro.
But Barcelona has not released an official statement regarding the rumours, neither has Messi openly confirmed the developments.
It has only been reported that Barcelona held an extraordinary, emergency meeting today after they received confirmation from the player.
Although it will be hard for the club to let him go easily, they may defend their rights to charge a fee for the player, rather than let him go for free.
