The United Kingdom is ready to pledge £12.6m to support Nigeria and other countries fighting against Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin.

British Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, made this known on Monday during a presentation at a meeting of foreign ministers from more than 45 countries in Rome, Italy.

According to Raab, the budget is part of the new UK funding to fight the growing threat of terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin region of West Africa.

He noted that the fund will also be used to combat Daesh and its affiliate terrorist groups, including emerging threats across the African continent.

Raab said: “The UK is funding a new Conflict, Stability and Security Fund programme for the Lake Chad Basin region of West Africa, where Daesh’s affiliate, known as Islamic State West Africa (ISWA), is responsible for significant violence.

“This will support regional military efforts to counter Daesh and other groups, as well as efforts to safely demobilise suspected low-level members of terrorist groups.

”Two years since Daesh’s territorial defeat in Iraq and Syria, the threat of Daesh and its hateful ideology has not gone away. Worryingly it continues to grow in Africa which is why we must work with our Coalition partners to fight its poisonous propaganda on all fronts.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our African partners to tackle the growing threat from Daesh-linked groups across Africa, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin.”

He noted that the UK is ready to tackle insurgency and the longer-term drivers of terrorism, both in the Middle East and in areas of Africa where attacks from Daesh-linked groups have been growing.

Raab added that the UK is committed to burden-sharing with its security allies, and to serve as a “force for good in the world”.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad, has ordered one of the 18 newly sworn-in Appeal Court judges, Justice Olasunbo Goodluck to repeat her oath of office after mentioning ‘Allah’ instead of ‘God’.

The CJN turned heads after he ordered the judge to return to the podium and say, “So help me God”, after breaking the ‘So help me God’ rule.

This resulted in a round of laughter from those present at the court. She immediately returned to the microphone and did as she was ordered.

The new appeal court judges were sworn in at the main court of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.

President Muhammadu Buhari approved the appointment of the judges following their recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

It will be recalled that the inauguration was supposed to have taken place in April but was postponed due to a nationwide strike of the members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) that grounded all activities in Nigerian courts for over two months.

The spokesman of the CJN, Ahuraka Isah, added that the postponement was to enable the new judges to “clear their desks in their various offices”, to ensure that there are no outstanding issues before they assume their new responsibilities.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has set up a Primary Election Appeal Committee ahead of the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

National Secretary APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, made this known in a statement made available to Naija News on Monday.

He noted that the caretaker chairman of the party and governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has approved appointment of a five-member appeal committee.

Akpanudoedehe disclosed that Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has been appointed as the Chairman of the committee, while Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu will serve as Secretary.

He added that other committee members are Senator Julius Ucha, Hajia Maryam Mamu Salifu, and  Alhaji Bukar Ali Dalori.

The party scribe added that the committee will be inaugurated on Wednesday at the Party’s National Secretariat, Abuja.

Akpanudoedehe said that the committee is expected to hear all appeals arising from the conduct of the Primary Election in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution and guidelines.

Recall that 11 of the 14 governorship aspirants of the party had on Saturday said the APC primary in Anambra did not hold.

The aspirants also faulted the emergence of Senator Andy Uba as the party’s flag bearer, claiming that the primary election was fraudulent.

They said anybody who claimed that there was primary is fraudulent and did not wish APC well in the November 6 election.

The aspirants, however, appealed to the party’s leadership to come up with a fresh date for the primary to ensure that the party beat the deadline set by the Electoral Act.

Activist and Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho has declared that he and his supporters are not going back on their demand for the Yoruba nation.

Igboho told President Buhari that they don’t want restructuring but an independent Yoruba nation.

The activist added that he wasn’t alone in his demand but has the support of many prominent persons who were working in the background.

He further accused the current administration of marginalizing the southwest region in terms of appointments into the government.

He said: “Our demand is simple, to tell Buhari that we do not want restructuring but Yoruba Nation.

“On Yoruba Nation, no going back. We have our faith in God. When God heard the cries of Israelites, he answered them; the cries of Yorubas have been heard by God. Noah’s ark can be likened to the current Yoruba agitation.

“I’m saying it boldly; nobody can kill us in this current struggle. May God carry us to our destination.

“Many people are even ranting on social media concerning the struggle, they need to join and support. What we are currently having now is awareness and peaceful rallies across southwest states.

“Don’t think we are joking, what we are pursuing now is Yoruba Nation. I’m not the only one fronting the Yoruba Nation Agenda right now; there are many powerful people who I have been meeting and working with underground.”

Igboho made the declaration when he received a vehicle presented to him by some donors to support the Yoruba Nation agitation.

“After him, we are expecting Governor Ikpeazu to follow. Talks have reached an advanced stage. You know will be concluding his second term by 2023 and of course, he would want to remain politically relevant. Details of conditions are still being worked out by both parties.

1). Manuel Akanji (Switzerland)

Borussia Dortmund man Akanji was born Wiesendangen in Switzerland to a Nigerian father and Swiss mother in 1995.

Akwnji comes from a sporting family. His father – a financial expert – was an amateur footballer in his younger years and still plays the game in his spare time while his mother is a former tennis player.

Michelle, his eldest sister, is an athlete. Another of Manuel’s siblings, Sarah, plays football for FC Winterthur in the Swiss second division.

At 19, Akanji was snapped up by FC Basel during the 2015/16 season and in his debut season he made eight appearances with the Swiss Super League giants, winning the league title despite an injury-hit maiden campaign.

He won the Swiss double the following season where he featured in 28 games in all competitions prior to completing his switch to Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He has helped the club win the German Cup and German Super Cup in four seasons.

Capped 29 times by Switzerland, Akanji will be making his first appearance at the European Championship, having helped Vladimir Petkovic’s side reach the Round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He will be looking forward to a brilliant European Championship debut with Switzerland, with the quality of players in their ranks, having been eliminated at the group stage three times before a last-16 exit to Poland five years ago.

With the Dortmund defender playing at his best, La Nati will be confident of sealing a best-ever finish this time around, particularly if their recent form is anything to go by.

They have won six games in a row and held Spain to a 1-1 draw ahead of that run, which stretches back to last November.

Indeed, only 12 nations are currently ranked higher than the Swiss globally, so falling short at the group stage again would be a major disappointment.

2). David Alaba (Austria)

Defender Alaba recently joined Real Madrid after 13 years at German giants Bayern Munich after 13 years.

The 28-year-old, one of the game’s most talented defenders, made his name as a left-back and played centre-back in his last season for Bayern, but will likely play in attacking midfield for Austria at this tournament.

Born in the Austrian capital Vienna on June 24, 1992, Alaba’s father is a Nigerian prince who arrived in Vienna to study Economics before becoming the first black guard soldier in the Austrian army. He is now a musician and DJ, while his mother, Gina, is a nurse, but was named Miss Philippines, the country of her birth, in the 1980s.

A legend at Bayern Munich, Alaba made over 400 appearances for the Bavarians winning 27 titles, including 10 Bundesliga trophies and the Champions League in 2013 and 2020.

He may not have won much with the Austrian national team, but the defender is a seven-time Austrian Footballer of The Year.

There are two other teammates of African descent in the Austrian squad for this tournament.

Alaba often has the Filipino flag stitched onto his boots while he celebrated with the Nigerian flag at Wembley after Bayern’s 2012/13 UEFA Champions League final win.

3). Bukayo Saka (England)

Born in Ealing, Greater London to Nigerian parents, football lovers in Nigeria had hoped Arsenal star Saka would wear the country’s green and white colours at senior level but the 19-year-old picked England instead.

On October 1, 2020, Saka was called up to the England senior squad for the first time and made his international debut in a 3–0 victory over Wales.

Saka, who has had two impressive season with the Gunners, has made five senior appearances for the Three Lions, scoring his first goal against Austria in a1-0 win.

Three Lions gaffer, Gareth Southgate, says Saka’s performance for club and country easily guaranteed him the spot on the team.

“Firstly he’s performed exceptionally well for us and performed well in a team that’s had a difficult season,” Southgate said.

“His adaptability, the fact he can play four or five different positions is a real plus for us.”

The teenager has shown his worth winning two Man of The Match accolades in his five appearances for England.

4). Karim Onisiwo (Austria)

Born to a Nigerian father and an Austrian mother, Onisiwo will be attending his first Euros in the colours of Austria after missing out on the 2016 edition.

The forward will be hoping to improve his scoring with the team, having only netted once in 11 appearances since his first cap in November 2015.

The forward, who features for Mainz in the German Bundesliga, had a season to forget, scoring a meagre four goals in 32 appearances across all competitions in Germany.

The 29-year-old will be hoping to help Austria make it out of Group C, where they are pitted against Netherlands, North Macedonia and Ukraine.

5). Jamal Musiala (Germany)

Born in Stuttgart to a German mother and British-Nigerian father, Musiala arrived in England at seven. He was eligible to represent England, Germany and Nigeria, but the Bayern Munich teenage sensation opted to represent Germany at senior level after featuring for England at youth level.

He had three caps for Germany, who are set to unleash the prodigy at the tournament.

Still 18, Musiala comes into his first-ever European Championship as a Bundesliga champion with Bayern, scoring six goals with one assist in 26 games, which left Germany boss Joachim Low in awe.

Earlier in the year, Musiala became the youngest player to score a goal for a German club in the Champions League, after scoring the second goal in the first leg of Bayern Munich’s 4-1 win over Lazio.

A Bundesliga, Club World Cup, UEFA and German Supercup winner at just 18, Musiala is way ahead of the curve and it would be a delight to see him deliver the goods at the highest stage of European football.
