A women's rugby team has stripped off for a naked calendar to raise money for the club after the club's finances were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Carlisle Cougars posed as they performed drills wearing nothing but their socks in a series of risque snaps.
Vice captain Hannah Farrell, 26, said the experiencing was 'nerve-wracking' but once they got going the players were happier without their kit.
'To be honest, we have joked about doing a naked calendar for years now, but we just never got round to it.
'We always thought it would be such a laugh, and a great way to raise money for the club, promote women's rugby and celebrate our strong bodies,' she explained.
'After Covid, the club was shut for a long time, so we thought now's the time to do it, raise money for the club and encourage women to give rugby a try.
'We're all very relaxed with each other in the changing rooms every week, but when it came to the photo shoot we were actually all pretty nervous!
Money generated by the calendar will be reinvested in the rugby union side, but that's only a bonus point for Hannah.
She said: 'Our goal was to show other women that anyone can play rugby, whatever shape, size or experience.
'There is always a place on a rugby team for you, whether you can run five or 500 metres. We accept and welcome players, no matter their rugby experience.
'Our players range from 18 to 40 years old, some are mothers, sisters, wives and aunties.
'We have players from students to shift workers, and we are understanding and accepting of everyone's circumstances.
'Women have a lot on their plate - family and work - so rugby is a space to have to yourself and relieve any tensions, while getting fit too!'
A wedding guest was killed and another injured when gunmen suspected to be kidnappers attempted to abduct the member representing Esit Eket/Ibeno in the Akwa State House of Assembly State, Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 7pm on Thursday, November 4, at Idung Ikpetuen in Uquo community of Esit Eket local government area where the lawmaker had joined other guests for a traditional marriage ceremony.
According to report, the gunmen shot severally as they unsuccessfully attempted to kidnap Hon. Akpanusoh.
A guest, Raphael Emmanuel was caught in the chest by the bullet and died on the spot while one other person is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The matter has since been reported to the police who have placed surveillance on the affected Community while investigations are ongoing.
Confirming the incident, the lawmaker said the heavily armed men attempted to abduct him as he was about entering his car after the traditional wedding ceremony.
He thanked God for protecting and bringing him safely out from the ugly situation while praying for the repose of the soul of the young man who died in the process.
Bianca Ojukwu, the widow of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has described the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, as a secret cult.
She made this known in a statement she released to mark the posthumous birthday of her husband on November 4
She said: "APGA is now like a secret cult, and this has reduced our once vibrant party to a shadow of its former self." Bianca also lamented the recent movement of members of the Anambra ruling political party to other parties.
She blamed the current situation in APGA on "leadership failure" by the party. She said: "Bad leadership has left a deeply wounded and visibly divided party, with members decamping from the party almost on a daily basis with the alacrity of rats deserting a sinking ship.
"Curiously, they are almost all defecting to APC. Our party has lost almost half of our state and national legislators, several principal members of our board of trustees, including the secretary of the board."
Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor has commented on the attack which was carried out at the Nigerian Defence Academy months ago.
Speaking during the Urgent Conversations programme of RadioNow on Friday November 5, the CDS stated that the NDA is just like other schools and they saw no need to fortify it to "such a level that the liberty that is required to be able to emplace the level of leadership, learning and skills are lost."
Admitting that he is embarassed that they did not forsee the attack, Irabor further described it as an " armed robbery attack of any unsuspecting individual." He also averred that it does not in any way dampen the preparedness of the armed forces to do defend the nation.
He said;
“Have we not been under attack? That an attack happened at the NDA does not imply that we are not under attack on a daily basis. Do you know how many of the attacks that we have had to ward off?
“The troops in the frontline, the terrorist elements, who are they attacking? Even in the south-east, who have they attacked? –police and military. The attack on the NDA is what I would likely describe as an armed robbery attack of any unsuspecting individual.
“In any case, that is a training institution. That it is called Nigeria Defence Academy or military academy does not mean that it is not the same as any other school.
“Of course, I was embarrassed that we did not foresee such a threat. NDA is not a place we think that we should fortify to such a level that the liberty that is required to be able to emplace the level of leadership, learning and skills are lost. That is a lesson that we have factored but that does not in any way dampen the preparedness of the armed forces to do defend the nation.”
On military presence in the South-East region, he said;
“The situation in the south-east is not exactly what the narrative out there is. Of course, the military is present like in every other part of the country even before the escalation of violence. We’ve always had different formations and establishments of the military in the region.
“When you hear that military has increased in the south-east, we say no, you’re wrong, we’ve always been there. We even have less number in the sense that the number of armed personnel whom we have had to move to reinforce the north-east and some part of north-west.”
A Dutchman had to undergo reconstructive surgery on his penis after a cobra bit his manhood as he sat on the toilet, causing it to rot. The incident happened during a safari trip in South Africa.
The 47-year-old victim suffered scrotal necrosis after the cold-blooded serpent, which was lurking in the toilet bowl, attacked, according to Urology Case Reports.
In what the medical journal described as the first case of “snouted cobra envenomation of the genitals,” the unidentified man had to wait three hours before he was flown by helicopter to the nearest trauma center some 220 miles away.
“His penis and scrotum were noted to be swollen, deep purple in color, and painful on hospital admission. Scrotal necrosis was diagnosed, and he received multiple doses of a non-specific snake venom antiserum and broad-spectrum antibiotics,” according to the medical report.
The man reported vomiting and a burning sensation as well as pain that shot up from his groin into the abdomen and upper chest – though he developed no neurological symptoms during the ordeal.
He required hemodialysis due to acute kidney injury before undergoing reconstructive surgery.
“The scrotal necrosis was reported to involve the entire fascia (skin to internal spermatic) and was excised with extensive margins. Primary closure was performed, leaving a drain in situ,” Urology Case Reports said.
“The defect in the penile shaft was treated by superficial debridement and a vacuum-assisted closure pump. After 9 days, the patient was repatriated to the Netherlands,” it added.
A plastic surgeon later performed a “penile shaft debridement, with extensive resection of dead tissue extending into the corpus spongiosum to the fold of the preputium.” A graft from the groin was then placed over the penis and he has made a full recovery.
A young Swedish rapper who had a number of chart-topping hits in the country was murdered on Thursday night, October 21, on the streets of Stockholm.
Reports said 19-year-old Einar, whose real name was Nils Kurt Erik Einar Grönberg, was shot in the head and chest in the port of Hammarby Sjöstad.
The shooting comes three months after rival rapper Yasin was jailed for 10 months for masterminding a foiled plot to kindap Einar in 2020.
Also, in April 2020, weeks after Yasin's plot to lure Einar to a music studio failed, Einar was kidnapped and held at gunpoint for several hours. He was tied up and beaten in a flat in an attack involving another Swedish rapper Haval Khalil. The kidnappers posted pictures of Einar to social media while he was being held by them, and claimed they sexually assaulted him in an attempt to humiliate him.
No one was charged with sexual assault in the case.
Officers were alerted to a shooting at 10:50 pm last night, October 21, officials said, but paramedics were unable to save the victim, and he died at the scene.
Local media reports that two people were spotted fleeing the scene on Thursday night.
No arrests have been made.
According to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Einar had received several threats lately, and the Swedish public broadcaster SVT suggested the murder could have been gang-related.
Following the news of Einar’s death, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said: "It is a young life that has been lost, and I understand that he meant a lot to many young people. It’s tragic that another life has been lost."
Einar was 16 when he started posting his songs to social media, and had his breakthrough in 2019 with his track Katten i trakten (The cat in the area).
The song made it to number one in the Swedish charts and was included on his debut album Första Klass.
Some of his popular songs include Första Klass, which has been listened to over 33million times on Spotify and Gamora, which has 29million listens.
His last single, FAST HÄR I TRAKTEN, was released earlier this year.
Mahjabin Hakimi, a member of the Afghanistan women's youth volleyball team, has reportedly been beheaded by the Taliban in the country's capital of Kabul because of its objection to women's sport.
After the murder of Hakimi, the group is then alleged to have posted pictures of her decapitating head on social media, possibly as a brutal warning to others.
Conflicting reports have emerged about the death of the young girl.
A death certificate that emerged showed she had possibly died a week before the Taliban took control following the retreat by the US and its allies from the country.
Other claims state that the young athlete took her own life.
A leaked photo of her body showed wounds to her neck, but it wasn't clear if a blade or a ligature point had caused this.
However, the Afghanistan based Payk Investigative Journalism Centre said that its sources had confirmed that Mahjabin had been "beheaded by the Taliban in Kabul".
In an interview with the Persian Independent, one of Hakimi's coaches - speaking under a pseudonym - said that she was killed in early October but that it had been kept a secret as her family had been threatened not to talk about it.
Dozens of female athletes have fled Afghanistan in fear of their lives since the Taliban swept back into power in August as the preexisting Afghan Government collapsed.
The Taliban has banned all sports for females since taking power, and have yet to allow girls to return to school for an education.
Only two of the women's youth volleyball team's players managed to escape Afghanistan, it has been reported.
"All the players of the volleyball team and the rest of the women athletes are in a bad situation and in despair and fear," the coach said, according to the Persian Independent.
"Everyone has been forced to flee and live in unknown places."
Hakimi played for Kabul Municipality Volleyball Club before the Taliban seized power.
Afghanistan's Chef de Mission at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Arian Sadiqi, fears for the lives of 12 Para athletes who are still stuck in the country and is worried that those who did not escape when the Taliban seized power have been forgotten about.
"If these girls don’t get help soon, they may fall into the hands of the Taliban and may get killed," Sadiqi said, according to Insidethegames.
Athletes Noorja Najafi, Rahela Haidari, Nargis Masomi and Benafsha Najafi have all called on European countries to help evacuate them from Afghanistan.
"The right to education has been taken away from us," said Najafi in a video.
"We cannot go to university safely or study safely because we are disabled," Najafi continues in the video.
"Without wearing a hijab, we cannot walk or go out.
"We are very worried that our lives are in danger."
The women's national volleyball team has petitioned for foreign organisations to help get them out of the country, but have so far been unsuccessful.
"Our players who were living in the provinces had to leave and live in other places," Zahra Fayazi, a coach for Afghanistan, told the BBC in September.
"They even burned their sports equipment to save themselves and their families.
"They didn't want them to keep anything related to sport.
"They are scared.
"Many of our players who are from provinces were threatened many times by their relatives who are Taliban and Taliban followers.
"The Taliban asked our players' families to not allow their girls to do sport, otherwise they will be faced with unexpected violence."
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has said that Buhari-led administration approved 878 contracts in 6 years.
Mustapha disclosed this at the mid-term ministerial performance retreat on Monday October 11. The SGF stated that most of the contracts are targeted at the country’s infrastructure, to boost economic growth and development.
Mustapha also revealed that the Buhari administration approved 319 policies and 206 briefs/notes within the last six years, adding that analysis of the approved policies show that the administration is committed to addressing the myriads of needs and challenges of citizens.
He added that the last two years have been the most productive as the federal executive council approved 381 contracts, 110 policies and 88 briefs/notes.
The SGF said;
“In terms of the performance of the federal executive council, let me acknowledge that the last two years have been most productive.
“During this 2nd term of Mr. President from May 29, 2019 to August 31, 2021, the federal executive council held 52 meetings and granted 579 approvals comprising 381 contracts, 110 policies and 88 briefs/notes.
“Overall, the total number of contracts, policies and briefs/notes approved by the federal executive council between November 2015 and August 2021 stand at 1,403 comprising 878 contracts, 319 policies and 206 briefs/notes.
“From the above, the 878 contracts approved by FEC have mostly targeted the provision of infrastructure, geared towards enabling faster economic growth and development.
“In the same vein, the analysis also shows that the government remained focused on its cardinal responsibility of responsively addressing the myriads of needs and challenges of its citizens through the 319 approved policies initiated during the period.”
Afghans recently resettled in Britain, after the Taliban overthrew the Afghan government, have begged to be allowed to return to their country.
A shortage of available permanent homes meant thousands of those Afghans who fought alongside British forces or fled in fear of their lives have been put up in hotels.
Late last month the Home Office permanent secretary Matthew Rycroft said 7,000 Afghans were in emergency accommodation, and many would remain there into the New Year.
The resettlement scheme, tagged Operation Warm Welcome, launched on August 29 to resettle Afghans in Britain.
However, a doctor said he’s had "a few patients telling me they want to go home" already.
He told the Guardian: "I had to put him on medication, and his wife, because they were so upset."
The delivery of the scheme intended to help Afghans rebuild their lives in the UK has come under criticism from numerous angles.
Concerns have been raised about refugees’ access to healthcare and getting registered with a local GP.
The Helen Bamber Foundation said contractors at some of the hotels were unaware of their obligation to get them signed up.
The charity’s lead doctor Jill O’Leary said the Home Office had a "blind spot when it comes to vulnerability".
Health charity Medcat also expressed concerns with the provisions for "destitute" asylum seekers.
A spokesperson said: "Arrangements by the Home Office and its contractors to house those waiting in interim publicly funded accommodation are medically dangerous."
In Greenwich, London, the council said nearly 700 Afghans have been resettled locally and slammed the "reprehensible" lack of clarity about what would happen to them once their quarantine period ended.
Deputy leader Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald said on September 9: "Having been through hell, the government continues to fail Afghan refugees.
"These are people who have experienced unimaginable trauma, sleepless nights, and fear for their family members back home.
"They now have the additional worry of not knowing where they will be sent next. The lack of basic leadership from the government is putting people’s lives at risk."
A spokesperson for the Home Office said: "The UK’s biggest and fastest emergency evacuation in recent history helped over 15,000 people to safety, and hotels remain a temporary measure to help accommodate those we brought here.
"It is going to take time to find permanent homes for everyone but we are working urgently with our partners to do so.
"Our aim is to support everyone who is resettled here to build a successful life in the UK, and that is why we work around the clock to provide wrap-around support to families. This includes working closely with local authorities across the UK to ensure everyone temporarily accommodated in hotels has access to essential provisions, healthcare, education and universal credit."
