The Nigerian military has warned politicians and military personnel against coup in Nigeria

The force issued the warning in a statement posted on its website by its spokesperson Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu.

He said the military would not put itself in a position that would undermine democracy, adding that it would crush any attempt to overthrow the government.

The attention of the military high command has been drawn to a statement purported to have been made by one Robert Clark SAN, suggesting that current political leadership should hand over power to the military for the purpose of restructuring,” said Brigadier General Nwachukwu.

He added that the Nigerian military “warn misguided politicians who nurse the inordinate ambition to rule this country outside the ballot box to banish such thoughts as the military under the current leadership remain resolute in the Defence of Nigeria’s Democracy and its growth.” because the military is ready to defend the country.

The full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any personnel found to collude with people having such agenda. The current security challenges are not insurmountable.” said Brigadier General Nwachukwu.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Army said the security challenges facing the country were insurmountable, adding that they were working with other security agencies to address them.

Insecurity plaguing parts of Nigeria continues to draw public attention, especially to what they see as the negligence of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in overcoming it.

The country has been plagued by Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings for ransom in the north-east and north-west, while separatists from the IPOB continue to attack police and other security forces in the south-east and south-east of the country.
Last week, a prominent Christian cleric who had previously backed President Buhari, Rev. Fada Ejke Mbaka, called on the president to step down or be removed.

He said the president had failed to protect the lives of the people and therefore did not see the point of staying in power.

The Federal Government has banned entry to non-Nigerian passengers who have been in Brazil, India or Turkey in the last fortnight due to concerns over the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement on Sunday, May 2, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman, Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, Boss Mustapha, disclosed that the travel ban, which will come into effect from Tuesday, May 4, does not apply to passengers who have transited through those countries.

Mustapha, who advised Nigerians to suspend non-essential travels to any country for now, said, “Any person who has visited Brazil, India or Turkey within14 days preceding travel to Nigeria, shall be denied entry into Nigeria. This regulation, however, does not apply to passengers who transited through these countries.

The following measures shall apply to airlines and passengers who fail to comply with I and II(a) above: Airlines shall mandatorily pay a penalty of $3,500 for each defaulting passenger. Non-Nigerians will be denied entry and returned to the country of embarkation at cost to the Airline.

Nigerians and those with permanent resident permit shall undergo seven days of mandatory quarantine in a Government approved facility at the point-of-entry city and at cost to the passenger.”

The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned individuals and groups whose utterances and actions threaten the peace and sovereignty of the country.

Public Relations Officer, DSS National Headquarters, Abuja, Dr Peter Afunanya, in a statement on Sunday, May 2, said, “The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby condemns the unsavoury statements by misguided elements who have continued to threaten the government, sovereignty and corporate existence of this country.

Notable are the unnecessary vituperations and activities of some religious and past political leaders who have either called for forceful change of government or mass action against it. It has been established that the main objective for these is to cause a disintegration of the country.

It is unfortunate that those in the forefront of this are respectable individuals who should be patriotic and not allow their personal ambitions to ruin the nation. The Service has also noted their desperation and penchant to collaborate with external forces and influences against Nigeria.

They are reminded that even though democracy offers free speech, it does not give room to reckless pronouncements capable of undermining security. It is instructive to note that the ballot box remains the vehicle of change in a democracy. In this regard, self-centered individuals and groups are warned to stop engaging in acts inimical to the peace and sovereignty of this nation.

While the Service reaffirms its unambiguous support to an indivisible, indisolluble and united Nigerian State in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, it will no longer tolerate deliberate machinations by subversive and hostile groups whose agenda is to throw the country into anarchy so as to serve the interests of their sponsors. Consequently, the Service is assiduously working with other security and law enforcement agencies to ensure the maintenance of peace and internal security of the country.”

United States President, Joe Biden, has raised the minimum wage of those working on federal contracts to $15 per hour which is equivalent to N5,700 at the official exchange rate of N379 per dollar.

This means that each worker would be able to go home with $10,950 monthly (N4.2 million).

This comes amid debates in Nigeria over the N30,000 minimum wage per month for workers which is equivalent to $66.

Biden took to his official Twitter account on Tuesday, to inform all workers in America of the development.

He wrote; “I believe no one should work full time and still live in poverty. That’s why today, I raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour for people working on federal contracts.”

Meanwhile, recall that in 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari forwarded an executive bill to the National Assembly for amendment of the National Minimum Wage Act after prolonged and heated negotiations between the workers, employers and the government.

Buhari signed the passed bill into law in April 2019, raising the minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000.

Some states have, however, been unable to pay the new wage.

The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, says the country’s security challenges are a consequence of the 1975 coup d’état.

The coup, which took place on July 29, 1975, overthrew Yakubu Gowon and brought Murtala Muhammed to power.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, April 26, Mohammed said the lead discussant at the town-hall meeting on national security organised by the federal government narrated how the Gowon government was planning to ensure free and compulsory primary education for children of school age.

According to him, “The fact is that in 1973, we were informed by the lead discussant and that the government of the day then had a retreat and said there must be a national pledge that what is that thing that we must do to ensure that we did not go through another civil war. The government of that day came out with a decision that what will prevent another civil war is to ensure that anybody born after January 1970 has free and compulsory primary education.

Regrettably that administration was overthrown two years later and all the lofty ideas and all the preparations that were needed to ensure that every child of school age acquired free and compulsory education were jettisoned. And we are paying the price today because if you have 13.2 million children of school-age out of school that is the market which Boko Haram, bandits, IPOB and other militants, that is the market where they recruit people.”

The minister said it was consequently resolved at the town-hall meeting that all three levels of government “must ensure that we go back to that and ensure at least free primary education for the first nine years for each child.”

Olasupo Ajani, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 11, has appealed to Nigerians to stop attacking the personnel of the force and see them as brothers and sisters.

Ajani made the appeal on Tuesday, April 27, during a stakeholders’ meeting and his familiarisation visit to the police command in Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he said, “You stakeholders that are here as representatives of the people; please sensitise your people and let us go back to the way we were before the EndSARS protests. EndSARS has created a sort of vacuum and we want to reclaim the space again and be closer to the people; any police that want to be successful must have the support of the people. We must cooperate and work together for peace to reign in this country.”

The founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has urged Nigerians not to give up on the country, saying Nigeria would fly again.

Speaking with journalists at his church on Sunday April 25, the clergyman said, “What God does for an individual He does it for the family, and what He does for the community, He can do for the country. The point is these people that received this divine touch they did not give up, did not think is all over, they knew that God can still do something, the country would have to adopt that same mindset, and know that whatever we are going through stop accusing this and accusing that while we are pointing accusing fingers we are trying to say let you be on you own and let me be on my own; let the East go and let the West go, and this one go.

If we are thinking like that we will not expect the solution God wants to give us but when we have hope and we know yet we have gone through some deep waters things are going to change, our God has the possibility to make things change. I believe that we will fly again.

And I believe and declare things will become better for our country, things are going to turnaround and we will still remain in life to enjoy the goodness of the Lord for our families and ourselves in the same country, and we are going to raise our heads and say this is my country, and God will do it and we will live to see the fulfillment.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has sought the assistance of the international community to curb insecurity in West African nations, especially Nigeria.

Speaking on Tuesday, April 27, during a virtual meeting with Anthony Blinken, US Secretary of State, Buhari specifically requested the United States (U.S) to relocate its Africa Command (AFRICOM) headquarters from Stuttgart in Germany to its theatre of operation, which is Africa.

According to a statement by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, Buhari said, “The security challenges in Nigeria remain of great concern to us and impacted more negatively, by existing complex negative pressures in the Sahel, Central and West Africa, as well as the Lake Chad Region.

Compounded as the situation remains, Nigeria and her security forces remain resolutely committed to containing them and addressing their root causes. The support of important and strategic partners like United States cannot be overstated as the consequences of insecurity will affect all nations hence the imperative for concerted cooperation and collaboration of all nations to overcome these challenges.

In this connection, and considering the growing security challenges in West and Central Africa, Gulf of Guinea, Lake Chad region and the Sahel, weighing heavily on Africa, it underscores the need for the United States to consider re-locating AFRICOM Headquarters from Stuttgart, Germany to Africa and near the Theatre of Operation.”

Musa Mustapha, a Nigerian boy has emerged atop his peers as far as boys cadet table tennis is concerned.

In a recent released by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Musa, 11, garnered a total of 128 points to top the ranking in the boys U-11 cadet category, according to Premium Times.

SportingLife reports that the young prodigy came first after getting 128 points. He is also ranked 17th in the U-13 category with his brother rated in 18th place.

Musa’s feat makes him the second African and first Nigerian to top the world ranking following the success of Hana Goda in 2020 where she was ranked the best U-15 female in the world.

The Al-Faizun Junior Academy student – who was part of the Nigerian star team that won the 2019 ITTF Junior Circuit in Ghana – is billed to be part of the World Youth Series (which replaced the ITTF World Junior Circuit) taking place later this year in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.

The young lad had made his senior debut for the country in the 2018 Nigeria Open in Lagos.

Nigeria has overtaken the Democratic Republic of Congo with 25 percent of people without access to electricity, making it the country globally with the highest number of citizens that lack access to power.

World Bank Group Practice Manager, West and Central Africa Energy, Ashish Khanna, disclosed this in his presentation during a virtual engagement with power reporters in Abuja on Wednesday, April 21.

According to him, “Nigeria now has the largest number of unelectrified people globally and the trend is worsening; of the electrified, the supply is very unreliable with widespread blackouts.

Electrification, which was growing at 1.1% yearly since 2010, has not kept pace with the population growth of 3% yearly. This has increased the deficit by 3 million people to 85m which is 57% of the population. Nigeria now has 25% more unelectrified people than the 2nd most unelectrified country (DRC – in absolute terms).

The power sector is operationally inefficient with unreliable supply exacerbated by high losses and lack of payment discipline. Businesses in Nigeria lose about $29 billion annually because of unreliable electricity while Nigerian utilities get paid for only a half of electricity they receive.”
