In line with His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno's directive to Chairmen of local government areas in the state to flag off the ARISE Food Security Program in their respective LGAs, the Transition Committee Chairman of Ini LGA, Hon. Inibehe Umah, yesterday, April 2, in company of other leaders and stakeholders of INI LGA to performed the official flag-off of the program which heralded the commencement of the distribution of free food to vulnerable households in the state to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.

Setting the tone, the TC Chairman said that the flag-off was a directive of the Governor as a follow up to the state flag-off the Governor performed last week at Itam Market.

He thanked His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno for feeling the sufferings of the people in this tough period in our country. He also commended the Governor for the revitalization of agriculture in the state by ensuring people return to farms to enhance food security and sufficiency.

He further stressed that INI LGA is known and recognized as the food basket of our state and thank the Governor for giving INI the Commissioner for Agriculture to complement the status of the LGA as the food basket of Akwa Ibom State.

He noted that the Governor has done credibly well by initiating the social register for the citizens to enable the government have a database to cater for the people.

Commending the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, Hon. Umah said that her tireless efforts in the Ministry of Agriculture to interpret the vision of the Governor is highly appreciated by INI people.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor took time to explain how the program works. She said that beneficiaries would be able to get the free food by presenting the food vouchers to the agents/vendors, emphasizing that the vouchers serve as purchasing powers that will enable them to get food without paying for it.

She added that the social register shall be reopened for new registration of people that were not captured.

Highpoint of the event was the flag-off of the program, which involved issuance of food vouchers and distribution of food items like Garri, rice and beans to the vulnerable.

Lawrence Udoide, Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, Honourary Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Projects, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Bassey, Vice Chairman, Ini Transition Committee, Hon. Innocent Udom, Secretary, Ini Transition Committee, Elder Akaninyene Ekpenyong, Former member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Prof. Ini Udoka, Former Chairmen of the Council including Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ebe and Rt. Hon. Dr. Etetim Anwatim.

Earlier today, Elder Godwin Akpan Udoh-Edehe Joined the secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah and other party faithfuls inline to the resolution by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akwa Ibom State Chapter that all the wards chairmen should convene a general meeting in all the 368 political wards of the state.

The SSG commended the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno for taking governance to the grassroots by appointing two Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants in Ward 7 and in the entire 368 political wards of the State.

The Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, has received the over hundreds of decampees and returnees from other political parties to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, inward 7, describing the move as an indication of the party's dominance of the Ward (State).

The SSG and political leader of Uyo LGA has also tasked party faithful and stakeholders of the PDP in Ward 7 to embrace and integrate the returning politicians back to the fold.

The SSG clarified that the purpose of the meeting which, according to him, was holding simultaneously in all the 368 wards of the state was to strengthen the party and reassured the people that Akwa Ibom remains a PDP state.

He assured the new and returning members of a sense of belonging in the party, which he said would retain control of the Ward.

"What we are doing today is also to reassure the people that this is a PDP state and we will always stand with Pastor Umo Eno for eight years, already we have seen his numerous achievement in these past months"

“You can see that the who-is-who in the ward is here and as a party man I have also come down to my ward because nobody is above the party. Government is large enough to accommodate diverse interests.... In politics it is necessary to build trust. Be steadfast so that you can be trusted" he added.

Speaking on behalf of decampees from the YPP, a former Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Samuel Efanga said I see know reason to be in an opposition party when my brother is the SSG, when Gov. Umo Eno appointed Prince Enobong Uwah has the Secretary to the State Government I immediately took a decision to return back to PDP because he is my brother".

He appealed to the SSG and the leadership of PDP to protect his interest and other decampees across the ward, adding that their return to the PDP is to identify with the obvious and laudable development strides of the Governor Umo Eno and they are ready to key into the philosophy of the Arise Agenda"

…launches free food voucher programme

Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, today, launched the free food voucher programme for the vulnerable and the neediest at the popular Itam market, located in Itu Local Government Area.

Flanked by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the two Senators representing Akwa Ibom North East and South respectively, Senator Aniekan Bassey and Senator Ekong Sampson respectively, the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah and other top government officials, Governor Eno, was messianic as he spoke of his government’s bottom -up approach, where the poor and the vulnerable would be assisted to Arise and shine.

The free food voucher for the vulnerable, is a key element of the Bulk Agency Bill that was signed to law a week ago, and the Board, equally inaugurated by the Governor, last week.

The key responsibility of the Agency, is to provide free staple food items : Garri, rice and beans to the most vulnerable through the Social Register.

At the launch of this programme today, the Governor was hailed as a leader with compassion, and the joy and happiness on the part of the recipients was palpable.

They prayed for the Governor and promised to stand by him, support him and continue to pray for the success of his administration.

“This is an incredible people - oriented program. This Governor is truly a Pastor. Look at the Christ-like humility he has shown here.

“He is standing right there, supervising the distribution of the food items; he greeted and touched the recipients.

“This is rare to see in people occupying such an exalted office,” Honourable Anietie Eka, a political chieftain from Uyo local government area, had observed.

Governor Uno Eno’s humanitarian acts are what has defined him. In his inaugural address on May29. 2023, he had clearly signaled the direction of his government: The need to bring governance closer to the people and have them be invested and take ownership in governance. “To those who may not be able to put food on your table, I will be your advocate and champion.”

Today, at Itam market, he took bold steps to do exactly, stating that, “ When leaders are faced with daunting social problems, they usually think outside the box and that’s what motivated me to set up the Bulk Purchase Agency and the free food voucher drive initiative.

“We had reviewed all of the options, and this for us, remains the best. We are partnering with the market leaders and I want to thank them for the cooperation we have so far received from them.

“Let me repeat here that this is purely an interventionist act; the solution to our food security remains the need for us to go back to the farm. Yesterday, I paid an unannounced visit to a farm run by one of your young men and I was so impressed with what the young man is doing and we pledge to support him. I will continue to pay visits to farms run by both people in government and others.

The highlight of the day’s event, was the announcement by the Governor of a 1.5 billion interest free -loans to Akwa Ibom traders to be managed by the Ibom Fadama Micro Finance Bank.

“ I have heard of how some of you go to some places to get loans with very high interest rates and that has, made the cost of food to go up, and before you finish paying the loans, you cannot meet up with your market or trading obligations anymore.

“I have come to tell you not to take such loans anymore. Consequently, we are releasing five hundred million Naira interest -free loans to each of the three senatorial districts (1.5 billion Naira in total,) to help your business.

The Governor also promised to construct a car park, provide solar panel light, modern toilet facilities, all of which were the prayers of the leadership of the Itam Market.

The Governor directed the Transition Chairmen of the remaining 29 councils ( Itu and UyoLocal Government Councils, having been covered by today’s launch ) to ensure they launch the free voucher food program by next Tuesday.

AKPABIO RAISES NIGERIA'S VOICE AT IPU

The President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, attended the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the first time in October last year as head of Nigeria's delegation. The session was held in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. At the event, Akpabio was elected member of the Executive Committee of the influential global organization.

His election was a triumph in international diplomacy for Nigeria. The last time that Africa's largest democracy enjoyed such privilege was 60 years ago, in1964 when Nwafor Orizu was Nigeria's Senate President.

Since he became a member of the IPU Executive Committee, Akpabio has played his part with distinction. He has become a marketer extraordinaire for his country, enthusiastically and deftly flying the flag of Nigeria in the global arena.

Akpabio has used his position to project Nigeria's voice and image at every opportunity. One of such opportunities is the ongoing Assembly of IPU.

On Friday 22nd March, 2024, Akpabio boarded a commercial flight out of Abuja, as the head of the Nigerian delegation again, to the 148th Assembly of IPU in Geneva, Switzerland. In the delegation are the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim among others.

During one of the sessions, Akpabio spoke passionately on the tragic war in Gaza. Through his thought-provoking intervention that day, Nigeria strongly registered her presence at the summit and demonstrated compassion for humanity.

Akpabio stressed before the august gathering that the most urgent issue in Gaza is that innocent lives are needlessly being wasted daily. That defenceless children and women are caught in the cross-fire of belligerency.

"Madam President, this is a lone voice from Nigeria," Akpabio began his intervention in one of the sessions. He spoke with candour and passion. He started by reminding the IPU President of an earlier failed attempt at the Luanda summit, in Angola, to make the Assembly lend a collective voice against the ongoing tragedy in Gaza.

"Today, the world is very expectant. We must drop ego. It has nothing to do with which country brings a proposal. The basic tenets of humanity demands that we leave here with resolutions for the rest of the world to show that we have humane feelings in us," Akpabio said.

For emphasis, Akpabio drew the attention of his fellow participants to the collateral damages being recorded in Gaza: "We have children who are dying even as we are talking now. We have people who cannot find water to drink even as we are talking now. We have those who are going to suffer from infections due to gunshots. We have to show the world that we are human beings."

From this preamble, Akpabio laid the basis for Nigeria's expectations from the Geneva summit. Without mincing words, Akpabio said: "Cessation of hostilities must be part of our resolutions. Access to humanitarian aids must be part of our resolutions. At the same time, release of hostages. We can no longer allow a child to die tonight without lending a voice...We must discuss the Gaza issue in this 148th IPU Assembly. That is my position."

Earlier in a comprehensive address, Akpabio spoke on "Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding." He touched on what Parliamentary Diplomacy could achieve in conflict resolution and in the quest for world peace and stability. In particular, he spoke of the importance of a collective voice: "Let us, as we gather at this critical juncture in history, recognize the power of our collective voice in shaping a better future for all.

"We stand at a pivotal moment in history, an intersection where the choices we make and the words that we speak have the potential to positively shape the future of a world in constant crisis. Therefore, we lend the voice of our country to the patriotic call for collective action to address the challenges facing our wonderful world.

"Let us advert our minds to Martin Luther King, Jr’s admonition that 'all mankind is tied together; all life is interrelated, and we are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of identity. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.' This is why we are here.

"We must walk together, hand-in-hand even if we do not see eye-to-eye, in our march to reshape our world. We must remember that we are the eyes, the ears, the hands and the minds of our people and we embody their hope for a brighter, more equitable future for this blessed world of ours. This, very distinguished ladies and gentlemen, is the legacy we owe the world."

Akpabio also seized the rare occasion to engage in aggressive marketing of his country Nigeria, by sharing with them the progress and initiatives of the Nigerian Parliament.

"In Nigeria, our Parliament plays a crucial role in curbing polarization and ensuring peace and progress through legislation. One notable legislative milestone in Nigeria was the passage of the “Not Too Young to Run” Bill in 2018, which aimed to widen the horizon for youth and women to actively participate in governance.

"The achievements of the Nigerian Parliament in upholding international commitments, promoting peace-building, and holding the government accountable deserve commendation. We call for more progress in parliamentary diplomacy and increase in our peace-building capacity, not only in Nigeria but across all sovereign states," Akpabio told his audience.

IPU, the global organization of national parliaments, was formed in1889 and has become a veritable platform for projecting one's country because of what the body stands for: promoting peace through parliamentary democracy and dialogue. Its membership spread of about 180 countries and still counting, out of the 193 countries in the world makes it a big platform for a country to showcase herself.

GOV ENO APPROVES EXPANSION OF EROSION CONTROL PROJECT TO SALVAGE NCS FACILITY IN UYO

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has approved the expansion of the scope of work at the ongoing Uyo-Ewet gully erosion control and beautification project to rescue the Nigerian Correctional Service facility from collapse.

The Governor gave the consent during an unscheduled inspection of the project at the Dominic Utuk Avenue axis of the site.

He commended the project contractor for opening up the area to expose the devastating erosion menace behind the Correctional Service facility and assured that the State government will intervene to prevent the imminent collapse of the facility.

Governor Eno stated that his administration remains committed to maintaining a healthy relationship with the President Tinubu led- federal government, to foster development and ensure that the people of the State benefit optimally from the common wealth of the nation.

"That's why I keep saying to people, you can't fight the Federal Government. You can only partner with them. As you can see, this is a Federal Prison, but we can't just allow this happen. We know the effect; God forbid if this area collapses, there'll be jail break and that will cause us problems," he stated.

He commended the commitment and giant strides recorded by the contractor, especially for identifying hazards in the process of execution of the project, and for taking the initiative to solve problems beyond the original scope of the job.

The State Chief Executive expressed hope that the project upon completion will serve the interest of the people of the state.

"I decided to stop by for an unannounced visit. That's how you check some things and know if your contractors are serious. So, I thank this contractor so much. For me, all of these discoveries, we thought it was just this area, but we thank him. He is not just concentrating on the scope, he has gone beyond the scope and I want to thank him.

"Honestly, I never knew the devastation was this much. All of this was covered by bush, and you won't even know the extent. This is literally taking down the walls of the prison. That's the tower and it is near collapse. If we don't intervene on time, you will wake up one morning and it's gone," the governor added.

He reaffirmed his intention for the project to be beyond just reclamation of the gully menace to creating a tourism site and hoped that it will be delivered in record time.

"This is not just a reclamation, it has become a tourism site. He told me he will deliver this in December for us to use. You don't know the amount of joy I have that we are beginning to create a message out of this mess. That's a whole joy for me," he said.

Managing Director of the contracting firm, Bulletin Construction Company, Chief Faysal Harb, thanked the governor for his approvals and kind words, as he restated his company's commitment to delivering the job by December, in line with the governor's wish.

Nigeria's delegation to the on-going 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), led by the President of the Senate, 𝗚𝗼𝗱𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝗸𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗼, has sought the collaboration of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in the area of Digital and Marine economies.

Addressing the WTO media, shortly after a courtesy visit to the Director General of the WTO, 𝗗𝗿 𝗡𝗴𝗼𝘇𝗶 𝗢𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗷𝗼 𝗜𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮, in her office in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, Senator Akpabio said, the delegation were at the WTO on a courtesy call and to look for areas of collaboration with the organisation in the various sectors of the economy for the overall benefit of Nigerians.

According to him, " we used our attendance at the IPU to pay courtesy visit to one of Nigeria's very costly export to the world, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala; the Director General of the WTO. We came to thank her for the job she is doing for the world and thank her staff for supporting and standing by her to succeed. We, in Nigeria are very proud of her."

" we had discussions on the various developmental programmes of the WTO and we noticed that there were spaces where Nigerians can become major players. We discussed issues affecting trade back home in Nigeria and ways in which the National Assembly can assist in removing barriers, through legislation for the benefit of our people.

"We also talked about issue of regulations concerning Digital economic contents, illegal finishing along the coastal states of Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa states. How Nigerian women could benefit from the recent program funded by the organization was also discussed. The establishment of a Digital trade portal, where-in, all trade information could be accessed by our people top our discussion with the WTO. "

Akpabio noted that ," the deliberations were fruitful and we are confident that with our support in all of these, Nigerians would be the better for it."

In his brief remarks, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, said, " our best export to the world, took her time to bring us up to speed on the various innovations and initiatives of the WTO and what Africa and Nigeria stand to benefit from. We are going back more refreshed because we have seen a space here for Africa to thrive in business and in trade."

Speaking in the same vein, the WTO chief, described the visit of the Senate president and the Deputy Speaker, to her office as "a huge honour. We were able to talk on those things we arevdoing at the WTO that would help make a material difference for Nigerians.

"We spoke of recent program that we launched in some development program from the standards and trade facilities to help in improving sanitary and vital sanitary standards for some of the crops in Nigeria, so that it helps in diversifying the economy to even fisheries and illegal mining of the waters of Nigeria".

According to her," a lot of things on the table have already been discussed. I am honoured by this visit and I am home-sick."
