The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has launched a security outfit known as the Eastern Security Network (ESN), which it said will protect the south-east and south-south from criminal activities.

Spokesperson of the proscribed group, Emma Powerful who made the announcement on Sunday December 13, said the outfit is a replica of Amotekun launched by the governors of the south-west to curb insecurity in that region.

He added that the “failure” of the governors of the south-east and south-south to enforce measures that will protect the people in those regions, led to the launch of the security outfit.

The statement read;

“The sole aim and objective of this newly formed security outfit known as Eastern Security Network is to halt every criminal activity and terrorist attack on Biafraland.

“This outfit, which is a vigilante group like the Amotekun in the south-west and the Miyetti Allah security outfit, will ensure the safety of our forests and farm lands which terrorists have converted into slaughter grounds and raping fields.

“We can’t watch helplessly while those we are agitating to liberate from bondage are gradually being eliminated by terrorists.

“We, therefore, advise every robber, kidnapper and other criminals to steer clear of Biafra land or brace for the worst. We must defend Biafra no matter the price.

“Biafra security network personnel will release special phone numbers for people to call whenever there is any case of criminality, including kidnapping and robbery activities, in the whole of Biafra land.

“Every resident in Biafra land should use the numbers to report any criminal activity anywhere in Biafra land for prompt response.

“Unnecessary police brutality on innocent citizens also must stop.

“Police and army checkpoints which have since been converted to extortion points should be dismantled. Any attempt to sabotage this security network will be stoutly resisted.”

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued a preliminary determination to investigate Nigerian security forces over allegations of “crimes against humanity” and “war crimes”.

The ICC Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, today, Dec 11, released a statement on the conclusion of the preliminary examination of the situation in Nigeria.

The statement begins: "Today, I announce the conclusion of the preliminary examination of the situation in Nigeria."

This is coming on the heels of allegations of human rights abuses by the country’s security forces in the north-east and other parts of Nigeria.

Fatou Bensouda continued: "As I stated last year at the annual Assembly of States Parties, before I end my term as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court ('ICC' or the 'Court'), I intend to reach determinations on all files that have been under preliminary examination under my tenure, as far as I am able.

"In that statement, I also indicated the high likelihood that several preliminary examinations would progress to the investigative stage. Following a thorough process, I can announce today that the statutory criteria for opening an investigation into the situation in Nigeria have been met."

She added that the ICC "found a reasonable basis to believe that members of the Nigerian Security Forces ('NSF') have committed the following acts constituting crimes against humanity and war crimes: murder, rape, torture, and cruel treatment; enforced disappearance; forcible transfer of population; outrages upon personal dignity; intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population as such and against individual civilians not taking direct part in hostilities; unlawful imprisonment; conscripting and enlisting children under the age of fifteen years into armed forces and using them to participate actively in hostilities; persecution on gender and political grounds; and other inhumane acts."

A Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday granted an order restraining Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei, Mr. Cairo Ojougboh, and others from performing the functions of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Justice Ahmed Mohammed also granted leave to the applicant to apply for judicial review for an order of mandamus compelling the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), sued as the 9th defendant in the suit to investigate the Minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the five members of the board over allegations of N3 billion contract fraud.

In suit number ABJ/CS/617/2020, Justice Mohammed, in a ruling on an application by a Civil Society Organisation Forum for Accountability and Good Governance, restrained them from parading themselves as Board members of the NDDC.

The court granted leave to the applicant to apply for judicial review of the powers of the President or the Minister of Niger Delta to appoint Prof. Pondei, Dr. Ojougboh, and others in an interim capacity as members of the NDDC board.

By this order of the court, the members of the NDDC Board are restrained from performing the functions of the board pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice which is fixed for December 8, 2020.

The plaintiff in the suit said it had notified President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and ICPC of the interim vacancy in the commission.

The plaintiff also urged that the most senior civil servant or administrator in the commission be appointed and prayed that the suspended officers are stopped from accessing the commission’s offices and files.

This, according to them, is to prevent them from tampering with evidence which could be used by the ICPC in its probe.

Parties joined in the suit are the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Senate, Minister of the Niger Delta, Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei and Dr. Cairo Ojougboh. Others are Dr. Joi Nunieh, Mrs. Caroline Nagbo, Cecilia Bukola Akintomide and ICPC.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has admitted error in Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s University of Ibadan (UI) certificate.

This is coming after the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Iboi Emmanuel, the party’s governorship candidate asked the tribunal to nullify Obaseki’s election on grounds of submitting false information to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to enable him run for office.

The petition read;

“Obaseki submitted a certificate purported to have been signed by the vice-chancellor and the registrar of the university.

“In the form EC9 submitted to INEC in 2020, Obaseki attached an un-dated certificate with only one signatory purporting to be the signature of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

“The petitioners will rely on oral and documentary evidence to show that professor Tekena Tamuno who was vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan from December 1975 to November 1979 had not only died in 2015 but could not also have signed a document purporting to be a document of the University of Ibadan after his retirement and death.”

However responding to the petition filed by the ADP and Emmanuel, the PDP said there was a mix-up in Obaseki’s admission and graduation year.

The party which blamed the error on a photocopier, added that Obaseki observed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme despite the mistake. It added that the petition was incompetent and statute barred, describing it as a pre-election matter ‘which the tribunal could not entertain’.

PDP's counsel, Adetunji Oyeyipo said;

“There was a misstatement in mixing up the year of graduation with the year of admission.

“While filling the forms for the election in 2016, Obaseki inadvertently and mistakenly wrote 1976 in a portion of the form for the year of the graduation which was the year of his admission into the University of Ibadan.

“At the time Obaseki was completing his form CF001 in 2016, he deposed to an affidavit stating that he had misplaced the originals of all of his certificates while changing offices with the intention to apply for a re-issuance if his certificates.

“Subsequently, before Obaseki submitted his Form EC9 in 2020, the original certificate issued by University of Ibadan was eventually found which has the signatures of the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of the University.

“The original certificate was issued in A5 size; however, in order for the photocopy of the certificate to be attached to the form CF001, the size was reduced to A4 and in the process, leaving out some information on the certificate.

“The tribunal lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the petition for reason that same is statute barred because the issues raised by the petitioner, according to the PDP are averments which are not relevant for the purpose of determining the petition at the Election Petition Tribunal, as the said averments relate to facts concerning the previous election conducted in 2016 and that since the election under dispute is that of September 2020 and as such should be dismissed."

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was slated to be the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization. However there has been an unexpected glitch in the process.

In a last ditch move, the United States representative at World Trade Organization took to the floor to insist that South Korea’s candidate remained a contender, and that Washington will not recognise Okonjo-Iweala as the consensus candidate for appointment as director-general.

In response to this, the General Counsel has postponed its announcement of the new Director-General until a further meeting, which is scheduled for 9 November; after the US presidential elections.

A panel at the WTO recommended her today for the position.  She would be the first woman, and the first African, to lead the institution.

 She had won the support from the vast majority of member states, including the EU, Japan and China, but not the United States.

The Nigerian police force SARS – that has been accused of brutality over the years received training and support from the UK, reports have claimed.

This comes after pressure grew on the UK to put economic sanctions on Nigeria following the disturbing handling of recent anti-police demonstrations by the Nigerian Police.

Last week, the Nigerian military opened fire on unarmed peaceful protesters who were singing the national anthem at Lekki tollgate on Tuesday, killing atleast 12 people.

Criticism has grown both regionally and internationally, resulting in the UK’s Labour MP Kate Osamor demanding Boris Johnson’s government to reveal its involvement with Nigeria’s notorious police unit Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and it has been uncovered that the UK is in the centre of the whole predicament

The UK’s College of Policing, which is the professional body for police in England and Wales, worked with the Nigerian authorities to train its security officers during 2019.Nigerian Police Force SARS Was Trained By The UK Police

Nigerian Police Force SARS Was Trained By The UK Police.

But the College of Policing spokesperson has since issued a statement denying their involvement in Nigeria’s disturbing developments.

He insists that the UK did assist Nigeria in training the security forces, but it was not on public order, rather financial crimes.

“Last year the College of Policing provided some law enforcement officers in Nigeria with training to improve standards, however this did not involve public order training.

The College works with various countries around the world and all of our training is consistent with the British model of policing by consent, with respect for human rights and dignity interwoven into all of our courses, ” the spokesperson’ statement read.

The presidency has explained why President Buhari didn't speak on the Lekki toll gate shooting during his speech yesterday October 22.

Presidential aide, Femi Adesina in an interview on Channels TV's 'Politics Today' said it will be “premature and presumptuous" for Buhari to talk about the shooting as it was still being investigated.

Adesina said;

“The Defence Headquarters issued a statement to say that it was investigating the matter. Lagos State Governor has also set up a probe panel to investigate what really happened.

“So, the President couldn’t have said anything because it would be premature and presumptuous while investigation is ongoing. It is after investigation has been concluded that he can speak on the matter.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appealed to #EndSARS protesters to vacate Lagos roads and embrace dialogue for resolution of the issues they are protesting against.

The Governor who made the appeal while swearing-in members of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution at the State House in Marina, noted that the pains expressed and concerns raised by protesters were genuine.

Asides pointing out that the continuous blocking of roads, government and private offices would slow down the procedure of implementing their demands, Sanwo-Olu added that the federal and states governments have acceded to some of their demands and currently working to implement the rest.

He said;

“We have shown unprecedented commitment to the complete overhaul of the Nigeria Police. The inauguration of this Judicial Panel of Inquiry is only the first step in a long line of reformative actions that will lead to a thorough revamp and reorientation of the Nigeria Police. I believe that some of the actions we have taken should, to a large extent, show our sincerity and willingness to address all your concerns.

“Let me reiterate that I am on the side of the young people out there. I understand your pain and I know your concerns are genuine and legitimate. While we are able to immediately acquiesce to some of your demands, some others will require time. We ask you to bear with us as we dutifully work on your demands.

“I will, therefore, like to renew my appeal to you to suspend the protests and create an atmosphere for the resolution of all pending demands. I encourage everyone brutalised by the disbanded SARS, including the families of those who died, to present their case before this tribunal.”

Nigerian Singer, Seun Kuti has called on the federal government to grant the request of #EndSARS protesters and not make decisions like they have the trust of the masses.

Seun Kuti made this call while speaking of Channels TV's "Sunday Politics" programme.

Commenting on the federal government's claim of meeting all the request of the young protesters and calling for an end to the protest, the singer stated that the government does not fully get what is being demanded and what the protest is about.

He said;

“This government should not act as if people trust them. They should not wear that toga for themselves. That is what I am saying.

“People should not sit in their high offices in Abuja. Bring yourself off your high horse. Come and relate with the people that just voted for you. Come and really hear what is going on.

“They have done judicial enquiry against SARS two years ago, what came out of it? It was this same government."

On claims of the protest being hijacked, Seun Kuti said;

“Don’t feel victimized, don’t think there is somebody trying to get you. No. These are your people trying to talk to you.

“This is actually a moment that we can actually build a bridge (between the government and the people), but they don’t want to hear that.”

The National Examination Council has postponed Paper I Computer Studies Practical’s scheduled for Monday, October 19, 2020, until November 16.

A statement released by the Head, Information and Public Relations Division, NECO, Azeez Sani, today Sunday, October 18, says the decision was taken because of the ongoing #ENDSARS protests, affecting the movement of people. He explained that the protest had affected the supply of examination materials.

The statement reads

“This is to inform the general public and especially candidates that the National Examinations Council (NECO) has been constrained to reschedule the Paper I Computer Studies Practical’s earlier scheduled to take place on Monday 19 October 2020, 10 am to 1 pm. The examination of this paper will now hold on Monday 16 November 2020, 10 am-1 pm.

This unforeseen incident has been caused by the ENDSARS protest that blocked the free movement of transport at the City entrance gate Benin.

The NECO delivery truck had left its take-off point well in advance two days earlier to deliver examination materials to some states and has been held up in the blockage since then.

The Council wishes to assure all stakeholders and the general public that the affected examination materials have been retrieved intact and are in the custody of NECO’s vault.

”While regretting any inconveniences this rescheduling may cause our esteemed stakeholders, the Council has however taken this decision in order to maintain the integrity and security of its examinations procedures for seamless conduct of the Council’s examination.”
