An angry mob set a suspected robber ablaze after he was allegedly caught trying to snatch a mobile phone in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital.

The incident happened at about 7 am on Thursday, December 17, along Abak Road, Uyo Akwa Ibom State.

It was gathered that the suspect was apprehended by Abak road residents while he was trying to snatch a mobile phone from a woman on Wednesday night.

A source around the area told newsmen that he was among notorious armed robbers that have been terrorising Uyo particularly the popular “Ibom Plaza’ and environs in recent times.

It was also gathered that the suspect specializes in snatching mobile phones and dispossessing the residents of their money and valuables.

"He is a member of the notorious armed robbery gang who has been terrorising the whole of Abak road, NEPA Line, and even the Ibom Plaza area. They always snatch people’s phone and dispossess innocent members of the public of their money," a resident said.

"But yesterday night his cup became full and he was caught in the act and burnt alive after snatching somebody’s mobile phone. In fact, I was told that when he was caught, some police officers arrived to take him to their station but they people refused and took him away to a Street, burnt him and later brought his corpse to Abak Road where everyone can see. It is unfortunate how young men waste their lives."

A Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday granted an order restraining Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei, Mr. Cairo Ojougboh, and others from performing the functions of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Justice Ahmed Mohammed also granted leave to the applicant to apply for judicial review for an order of mandamus compelling the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), sued as the 9th defendant in the suit to investigate the Minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the five members of the board over allegations of N3 billion contract fraud.

In suit number ABJ/CS/617/2020, Justice Mohammed, in a ruling on an application by a Civil Society Organisation Forum for Accountability and Good Governance, restrained them from parading themselves as Board members of the NDDC.

The court granted leave to the applicant to apply for judicial review of the powers of the President or the Minister of Niger Delta to appoint Prof. Pondei, Dr. Ojougboh, and others in an interim capacity as members of the NDDC board.

By this order of the court, the members of the NDDC Board are restrained from performing the functions of the board pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice which is fixed for December 8, 2020.

The plaintiff in the suit said it had notified President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and ICPC of the interim vacancy in the commission.

The plaintiff also urged that the most senior civil servant or administrator in the commission be appointed and prayed that the suspended officers are stopped from accessing the commission’s offices and files.

This, according to them, is to prevent them from tampering with evidence which could be used by the ICPC in its probe.

Parties joined in the suit are the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Senate, Minister of the Niger Delta, Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei and Dr. Cairo Ojougboh. Others are Dr. Joi Nunieh, Mrs. Caroline Nagbo, Cecilia Bukola Akintomide and ICPC.

The Ibom Christmas Village may have its few low points, especially in this year's edition, but it remains a grand idea.

Tourism the world over has become a huge cash cow and the attraction lies in its originality and the unique experience it offers. For this particular reason, we must applaud the idea and progenitors behind the Ibom Xmas Village.

The hallmark of a city's bustleness is usually evident in her end of the year itinerary. The sophistication and social contents of her celebrations are key here. The Ibom Christmas Village ranks top up is this regard.

In the absence of the usual Christmas glitz in the neighboring city of Calabar, the Ibom Xmas Village in Uyo has assumed the status of the signpost end of the year event in this clime and is growing by the day.

The village offers a real festive experience and has true potentials of becoming a major holiday festival in Africa. It offers the people of the city readily available, affordable pasttime, meet ups, hangout and social connects. These stuffs make a city what it is.

Beyond the fun routines, the economic benefits of the village are enormous. Stories abound of the big cash windfalls that partakers in the village were greeted with last year, the customers connect and the business opportunities the post event afforded them.

With nearly 1000 kiosks, the Ibom Christmas Village is a real experience, a tourism A-lister and a near perfect end of the year event. It is time we left all negative sentiments and embrace this high dreams, promote it with positive gusto and make Akwa Ibom the envy of other states in the federation.

"Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality". - Warren Bennis

American historian, Gordon Curley, told a story about a time when Spain possessed the territory both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar. So on their coins they stamped the two Pillars of Hercules, which is what the two promontories of rock were called. And on a scroll they inscribed the words, "No more beyond." Meaning there ain't nothing else out there. They felt this was the end of the road. Then came the discovery of the New World, and with it the realisation that there was in fact something else out there. So they changed the coins to read, "More beyond." This is the mindset of an eagle:
An eagle can see a mouse from a mile above the earth.

At a point in our lives, we had thought that successive administrations have done all there's that should be done, and like the characters in the short story above, we felt "No More Beyond". Suddenly, a man showed up and exclaimed "More Beyond!".

Gov. Udom Emmanuel has shown rare magnitude of doggedness in leadership through well defined visions he brought to bear while discharging his duties as governor. In so many sectors of our economy, he is shouting "More Beyond!". There's more to be done about the Ibom Deep Seaport project. There's more beyond industrialization. There's more beyond the Molecular Laboratory and Isolation Center. There's more beyond consistent payment of salary, and that there's more he can do beyond being very responsible and unassuming, even in such position as a governor.

In Akwa Ibom we have seen a man who has refused to give up amidst challenges. We have seen a man who has refused to give excuses even when there are so many to give. We have seen a governor who is never satisfied with what he has achieved so far. He feels there are more worlds to conquer, and true to his conviction, he is conquering more worlds. He is conquering more worlds in the education, sport, women development, capacity building, agriculture and works sectors of our economy. This is the mindset of a visionary leader.

Visionary leaders characteristically bring cohesiveness to inspire everyone to be on the same page. To meet their objectives, visionary leaders are often charismatic and determined. They identify themselves as confident coaches who are meant to guide the team through transitions or difficult organizational eras. These are difficult eras, yet, in Akwa Ibom the present administration is achieving its goals with ease. This is what vision does.

Ralph Lauren said “A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the power and energy to get it done.” This is what Gov. Udom Emmanuel is doing. Showing resilience and focus in the midst of violent and uncultured verbal attacks on him. He has refused to be distracted.

Instead of succumbing to the onslaught, he is adding more feathers to his cap through construction of more roads, building of more industries, revitalizing the healthcare system, institutionalizing good values of self reliance, industriousness, responsiveness and inclusive/youth-oriented administration.

This explains why youths are given leadership positions across board, beyond the SA and PAship which were the only positions reserved for the youths in time past. But today, youths are commissioners, Board chairmen and directors, chairmen of council, etc. It has never been so in the history of Akwa Ibom. This is visionary and legendary.

Today, we can sleep with our two eyes closed. There's relative peace in all parts of the state. People can go about their legitimate businesses without fear of harassment and intimidation by hoodlums. This is what a man of vision can actualize. For where there's no vision, the people perish.

What is most amazing is that in the midst of attacks from those who hate purposeful and result-oriented leadership, Gov. Emmanuel has remained focused, dogged, unperturbed, unmoved and resilient. He is still focusing on the mandate of the Completion Agenda, putting finishing touches on projects already initiated and initiating new ones.

These are all products of a visionary leader who is bent on translating Akwa Ibom dreams to reality. This is the Completion Agenda!

All is now set for the commencement of 7.2 km Ibrahim Babangida Avenue flood control project in Uyo.

The N12b World Bank assisted project awarded to China Road and Bridge Corporation,CRBC, cuts across 17 communities in 3 local government areas Uyo, Nsit Ibom and Ibesikpo Asutan.

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources, Sir. Charles Udoh, who made the disclosure Monday, on a radio programme, 'Dakkada Akwa Ibom' noted that his ministry has commenced the process of first phase of payment of compensations for the project which is expected to be completed in 18months.

He said Governor Emmanuel was moved becuse for over 15 years several communities including parts of the State Secretariat, the Mechanic Village, the Police Headquarters at Ikot Akpan Abia, and the Babangida Avenue, among others, have been impassable during rainy days.

"The project costs so much, and the state government could not handle it all alone. We made an appealed to Federal Government but there was no response.

"However the Governor was able to secure the support of World bank to partner with the state on the project, don't forget His Excellency has been a top executive in one of the best banks in the country, and so his high integrity profile was able to secure the deal with world bank.

"The Governor made a promise, today we are grateful because we are in the process of evacuating the flood, this morning
we will start paying compensation through counterpart funds released by the state government and evacuation will commence soonest at that site as the contractors have started ground mappings."

He said that Akwa Ibom State Government is so meticulous in project delivery as standard environmental impact assessment have been carried out.

He said the drainage projects will comprise both underground and surface drains which are 6.8m wide and 3.4 m deep, while fences will be built to cover open drains, with culvates available.

He said apart from compensation in cash, mini water projects would be executed in communities where sources of drinking water are affected by the project.

The Commissioner noted that this administration inherited a lot of liabilities as humongous amount of money had been invested on flood control by previous administrations who unfortunately did not follow the master plan for development as most drainage systems were not properly done and are currently non functional.

On the issues raise by the activities of multinational oil companies in the state, Mr Udoh said that the Ministry of Environment and Petroleum Resources will continue to serve as a mediator between communities and International Oil Companies, IOCs to ensure that a standardised MoU template is signed to enable oil companies carry out their cooperate social responsibilities like projects, taxes, employment quota to host communities as well as other measures to arrest restiveness in those areas.

Sir Charles Udoh, also hinted that Nigeria content law would soon be domesticated in the state as a draft has been sent to the Attorney General of the state and Commissioner for Justice, Uwemedimo Nwoko,SAN for vetting which would subsequently be sent to the State House of Assembly as well as Petroleum Industry Bill which is also being looked into.

He maintained that environmental health is one of the priorities of Governor Emmanuel's administration, and noted that he has set up a committee to act as an interface between host communities and the oil companies.

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Wednesday night visited his Akwa Ibom State counterpart, Dr. Udom Emmanuel, at the Akwa Ibom Government House, in Uyo.
The visit is coming exactly 3 days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Obaseki as the winner of the September 19 Edo Governorship election.

Ibom TV correspondent in Uyo reports that the Edo governor was in Akwa Ibom to express gratitude to Diri and the people of the state for their support which made his re-election possible.

Governor Obaseki, who said he remains grateful to Gov Udom, described his victory in the election as a unifying factor for the South-South region of Nigeria.

On his part, Governor Udom Emmanuel said with the “reclaiming” of Edo State by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the South South zone was now “more united.”

Earlier, Governor Obaseki was at the Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States Government House to thank Governors Ifeanyi Okowa, Douye Diri and Nyesom Wike for the roles they played in his electoral victory.
Obaseki was accompanied by his wife, his deputy, Philip Shuaibu, his wife, PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih, Senators and Rep members from the state, top government functionaries and party chieftains among others.

Igbere TV reports that Governor Obaseki defeated Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), 12 other contestants to win the just concluded September 19 Governorship election in Edo state.
